Here’s Why You Want a Nebraska Ignition Interlock

You are here: Home / Laws / Here’s Why You Want a Nebraska Ignition Interlock
October 17, 2016 by Editorial Staff

You Want a Nebraska Ignition InterlockNebraska is one of a majority of states that requires an ignition interlock device after a DUI. The Sooner State requires interlocks after any DUI, even a first offense with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) right at the legal limit of .08 percent. The devices are trusted across the country to prevent a DUI offender from any further drunk driving incidents. That’s just one reason to look forward to an ignition interlock after a Nebraska DUI, that and how the device may save your car from immobilization or impoundment.

Impounding or immobilizing a car after a DUI isn’t only a consequence in Nebraska. New Mexico, for example, also has the same policy for drunk drivers as well as the same mandatory ignition interlock requirement for a first-time offense. The difference is that Nebraska DUI law states that you can forego the impounding of your vehicle when you prove you have installed an ignition interlock device. New Mexico can do both, according to that state’s laws. If you think about it, interlocks are best known for their hand in allowing offenders to keep up their jobs or family obligations. In Nebraska, an ignition interlock also allows offenders to keep their vehicles.

There is always the chance that you may have had a few too many drinks and then must make a choice to get home safely or risk a Nebraska DUI. Instead of running into the risks on the road for driving under the influence, or the risks you’ll face in court, be smart when you head out for the night. Have a plan to get home safely if you know you’ll be drinking, and easy access to a taxi or other safe ride service. Just because an ignition interlock allows you to keep your vehicle in Nebraska, that doesn’t mean you have to put yourself in the position of that consequence to begin with.
