Sue’s Interlock Story

Sue needed an ignition interlock.  She called the provider listed on the card her probation officer handed her after court. The salesperson was high pressure, and before she knew it, her credit card had been charged and she accepted an appointment at a location that wasn’t her choice at a time that wasn’t super convenient.  But at least she could check that off her list of things to do, right?

After the installation, Sue was ready to get to an important work meeting. She followed all the instructions and blew into the interlock, getting a pass reading.  Relieved, she turned the key to her ignition, ready to start her day. Nothing. No click, no turnover. Panic started to rise. She didn’t have time for this! Now what?

When you need an ignition interlock program you have a long list of things to worry about.  Treatment classes, sanctions, and fines are all concerns after an impaired driving arrest or conviction.  When you start calling providers for ignition interlocks your focus may be on finding the closest locations and cheapest cost.  That’s understandable.

But installing an ignition interlock is only the beginning.  While program length varies, most people are using their interlock for a year or longer.  The result is that you and your interlock provider are embarking on a relationship, not just a transaction.  The reliability and correct installation of their device is key to ensuring they successfully complete their programs.   Having expert, caring customer support teams that are able to help you through the process is vital.

Make sure you ask these questions when you are selecting an ignition interlock provider:

  1. Who do I call if I have a problem with the device?
  2. Will you provide training on using the device?
  3. Do you have a reporting team that communicates directly with my monitoring authority?

Some interlock companies don’t bother giving you upfront pricing or mention all the things you’ll need to do to drive legally. Their commitment to you ends when your credit card number is on file. Be cautious. Read reviews and comparison shop.   This way, your ignition interlock provider will be your partner in successfully completing your interlock program.
