bigstock-Spinach-Smoothies-45924787Despite its religious and cultural roots, St. Patrick’s Day has become increasingly associated with high alcohol consumption. As a result, U.S. roads and highways have become an unlucky place to be during the Irish holiday.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 700 people were killed in drunk driving-related crashes during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday period from 2006 to 1010. There 129 DUI-related fatalities in 2010 alone.

In an effort to reduce drunk driving and save lives, law enforcement initiatives increase during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday period thanks to the NHTSA’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

You can also help create a safe yet fun holiday by equipping your St. Patrick’s Day bash with creative, alcohol-free mocktails and holiday-inspired drinks. Festive, alcohol-free drinks are also perfect for family friendly celebrations and allow those recovering from alcohol addiction to join in the festivities. From green non-alcoholic beer to alcohol-free Irish coffee, the possibilities are endless!

You can even stray from the traditional beer and Irish beverages and create a delicious green-themed drink that everyone will love. Try the Peppermint Patty Green Monster smoothie from Oh She Glows or Healthful Pursuit’s Key Lime Pie Green Smoothie for a healthy yet decadent St. Patty’s Day treat.

If you do decide to enjoy a green beer or two with friends at your local pub, please don’t drink and drive. Plan a safe ride home before festivities begin. Some options include designating a sober driver, using public transportation, or calling a cab or your community’s sober ride program.
