Bad Memories: Preventing a Memorial Day DUI

You are here: Home / General Information / Bad Memories: Preventing a Memorial Day DUI
May 26, 2017 by Editorial Staff

Memorial Day DUI preventionMemorial Day may signal the beginning of summer for many, but we should all keep a few things in mind over this extended weekend. Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember the efforts of our servicemen and women and their roles in protecting our freedom. As such, it is even more important that we keep that in mind by avoiding a Memorial Day DUI.

Long holiday weekends are typically considered the more dangerous times for drinking and driving. That extra day of rest gives too many people a “green light” to drink more than they normally would. Then they drive home because that’s what they’re used to doing. For some, the alcohol is flowing and the result is a Memorial Day DUI on a boat or other watercraft (sometimes called a BWI). No matter how you look at it, a Memorial Day DUI is the last kind of memory you want for the rest of your life, and it isn’t the best way to celebrate such an important holiday for Americans.

Any DUI, DWI or BWI can result in jail time, community service, court costs, and ignition interlock requirements. Memorial Day travelers are especially at risk, considering the sheer number of drivers on the road and the opportunity for a little fun in the sun.

Instead, you can make better choices to keep you and your loved ones safe. Even if you will not be out on a boat or partying on the beach, if you know you will have alcohol around during the holiday weekend, have a plan for a safe ride home. It can be easy to have another drink or two, knowing that you don’t have to show up for work on Monday, but the risks involved could put you in a tough predicament. Play, have fun and stay safe this Memorial Day. Those are the kind of lasting memories that holidays are all about.
