Business Travel and Your Ignition Interlock

Traveling for business with an ignition interlockAfter a drunk driving conviction, it is vital to get your life back together, which is why an ignition interlock is such a great tool to have during that time. The ability to get yourself back and forth to work in your own interlock-equipped car is important so that you can pay your bills and take care of your family. But, when your job requires that you travel around the country, you have to remember that your ignition interlock device needs to travel with you, in one way or another.

Your ignition interlock should be part of your business travel plans because:

  • If you travel for business in your own car, your ignition interlock requirement is not any different than it is where you are commuting back and forth to work. You stay sober when driving, use the device when prompted and keep moving your life forward. Just be sure to schedule your service appointments in between your road trips.
  • If you have a company car, you need to explain your situation to your boss. Some states will allow an employment exemption for ignition interlock drivers. Others will require that you install and use the device in your employer’s vehicle. Either way, make sure you are compliant, so that you aren’t looking at any violations.
  • If you fly to different locations and formerly rented a car while staying in another city, you will need to make other plans. Renting a vehicle when you have an ignition interlock designation will be nearly impossible, especially since the law in the state could prosecute the rental agency for allowing you to drive without an ignition interlock device.

Traveling for business can get complicated when you have an ignition interlock requirement, but, that does not mean you have to cancel your plans. Think ahead, knowing that your top priority is maintaining your sober driving record, so that you can look forward to a future where drinking and driving is no longer a factor in your travel plans.
