You Can’t Buy a Car Breathalyzer in Oklahoma!

There are plenty of things we need to put on our list of “must haves,” and after you get a DWI in Oklahoma, you may have to add a car breathalyzer to that list. With all of the obligations you have to the court and to your family and loved ones, buying a car breathalyzer or ignition interlock device may seem like the smartest financial route to your recovery. You can get all the costs out of the way and jump ahead in your recovery, right?  Unfortunately, in Oklahoma, you cannot buy the device…  at least not one that is compliant with the state’s ignition interlock program.

You can’t buy a car breathalyzer in Oklahoma because they are not for sale. Logically, if the device is purchased, that gives it a “one time” transaction feeling that reduces the effectiveness of the program. After that purchase, more people are likely to violate the  periodic monitoring aspect of the requirement than they would with a monthly or bi-monthly service appointment. By eliminating that possibility, Oklahoma ensures that anyone with a car breathalyzer is using it as directed, and is unable to circumvent the device without facing more consequences.

Of course, there are those who may try to outright sell you a car breathalyzer, but remember that the state will not accept that as a true step toward DWI recovery. Once you have put the legwork into finding a reputable ignition interlock service provider, the difference is clear, and that your time doing the research will pay off with a clean record of sober driving. Plus, once you get to that final appointment where the device is removed, you can be assured that you have done everything right to make up for your DWI.
