As the holiday season approaches, it’s tempting to drink more than we normally would. After all, we have more time off from work, and more opportunities to drink. We have more reasons to drink, whether it’s to celebrate with our families or to decompress a bit due to those same familial obligations. Whether you choose to partake in Blackout Wednesday or holiday shots, remember that the best way to DUI-proof your life is to have a plan before you take your first sip of holiday wine.
Keep it sober or safe this holiday seasons with these tips to DUI-proof your end-of-year festivities.
- Designated driver. You can (and should) offer to be a designated driver at least once this year. It is not only the right thing to do, but you are guaranteed to DUI proof your evening if you just don’t drink. Remember that being a designated driver does not mean you’re the least drunk, but that you chose to abstain from all alcohol for the duration of the event.
- Safe Ride Smartphone. Load up your phone with phone numbers and apps that will keep you from making a bad call at last call. Rideshare services, sober rides (where available), but schedules and your bestie on speed dial are all ways to make it a lot easier to be safe, rather than sorry.
- Breathalyze Yourself. There are apps and gadgets that can help keep you way under the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit if you use them properly. At the same time, if you monitor how much you are drinking and follow up with a pocket BAC test, you can have a little fun and be safe, too!
Sober drivers are the holiday season’s rock stars. Each year, more DUI arrests are made between Blackout Wednesday and New Year’s Day than any other time of the year. DUI proof your holidays and steer clear of the legal troubles that can change the way you see all future celebrations.
