Do I Need an Ignition Interlock Device in Oklahoma?

There’s a lot of chatter about car breathalyzers (ignition interlock devices) these days. Every state in the U.S. has some type of ignition interlock requirement, including Oklahoma. But, not all states require the devices for all drunk driving convictions… including Oklahoma. So, when you’re in the Sooner State, you should keep in mind that you’ll need an ignition interlock device in Oklahoma if:

• Your parent, guardian or the owner of the car you’re driving requires the device. Voluntary ignition interlock installations are more common than most think, and are especially helpful to keep families safe from dangerous drunk driving behavior. In some cases, the ignition interlock device in Oklahoma could be court-ordered, and you’ll be required to use it if you are driving the vehicle, in order to keep a DUI offender compliant.
• Your employer requires the device on company vehicles. Some employers are adamant that nobody “on the clock” will be able to drink and drive the company vehicles. Whether you have a regular license and access to a company car or a CDL and you drive a truck, bus or other commercial vehicle, you could be required by your boss to blow into an ignition interlock.
• You have one or more DUI charges and/or convictions. Oklahoma can require the device through the DMV or as a result of your DUI hearing in court. With a second DUI conviction or a first-offense DUI with a high blood alcohol concentration (BAC), you are guaranteed to have an ignition interlock requirement.

A DUI isn’t the end of the world, nor is an ignition interlock device in Oklahoma. If you’re faced with the device, just remember that when it comes down to it, driving responsibly saves lives each day. You may not feel you need an interlock in Oklahoma, but others do, and with the device you become part of the solution we all want to see.
