With the holiday season and alcohol-filled gatherings behind us, there’s no better time to assess your drinking habits. Perhaps you found yourself hitting the bar hard during the holidays or still find yourself reaching for an extra drink or two even though the party’s already stopped. Maybe it’s just a result of holiday stress or your way of unwinding when it’s all over, but when it comes to excessive alcohol consumption, chalking it up to stress could just be a way of burying a serious problem.
However, the amount of alcohol you consume isn’t the only determining factor of a drinking problem or alcohol addiction. You may not drink every day, but if you often find yourself blacking out or throwing up after drinking, have been charged with one or more DUIs, or feel you have to drink around certain people or in certain situations, you might have a drinking problem that could quickly escalate into a full blown addiction if you don’t seek help now.
Using information gathered from Psychology Today blog post “How to Know If You Have a Drinking Problem,” Lakeview Health Systems created the infograph quiz below to help you assess whether or not you have a drinking problem or addiction. If your answers worry or surprise you or if you find it hard to answer, please seek help from your doctor or a mental health care professional who can provide you with a proper alcohol assessment and information on alcohol addiction and point you towards the path to recovery or addiction prevention.
